Peter Brock’s 1978 Bathurst 1000 Winner Hand Built From Scratch
Everyone’s seen the diecast. You buy it, crack open the box, stick it on a shelf and admire the history. This one didn’t come finished, it was hand built from scratch.

This is Peter Brock’s 1978 Hardie-Ferodo Bathurst 1000 winning A9X Torana, built the hard way. Starting life as a plastic model kit in a box and turned into a dead set miniature race car through time, skill and obsession with detail. And yeah… the result is unreal.

Inspiration behind the build

The 1978 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 was run on 1 October 1978 at Mount Panorama, and it was a turning point in Bathurst history. Peter Brock, chasing his third win, teamed up with Jim Richards, who was still a newcomer to touring cars.

In the Holden Dealer Team A9X Torana, there was no drama and no late race heroics. They just got on with it. After the full race distance, they crossed the line a lap ahead, beating another Torana, with the first Falcon home back in third.

It was Richards’ first Bathurst win, making him the first New Zealander to take the top step, and it marked the Holden Dealer Team’s third victory at the Mountain.

That’s the car this build pays tribute to not just an A9X, but the A9X that earned its place in Bathurst history.

Built Like the Real Thing

The body didn’t go anywhere near paint until everything was test fitted. Panels checked. Gaps rescribed so they wouldn’t disappear once sanding and paint went on. This is the stuff you don’t see at first glance, but it’s what separates a toy from a proper build.

Once prepped, the body was primed, painted and then carefully mounted on the chassis to check stance. Wheels on. Ride height right. No shortcuts.

Inside, it’s all business, just like the real Group C Torana. Bare, purposeful, and race ready.

Then there’s the engine bay. This is where it really comes alive. Everything is there for a reason. Wiring, plumbing, small details most people miss, nailed. It’s the kind of engine bay you keep coming back to for another look.

Why This Build Hits Hard

Because it respects the car. This isn’t someone slapping decals on plastic and calling it a Brock Torana. This is someone who understands why the 1978 A9X mattered to Bathurst fans, Holden diehards and anyone who remembers when touring cars were raw, loud and unforgiving.

Whether you’re into Bathurst history, real race cars, or thinking about building your first serious model, this proves what’s possible when you do it properly.

No shortcuts. No diecast. Just a legendary Aussie race car built with passion and reborn at 1:24 scale.
