FINAL LAPS: Whincup runs out of fuel as Mostert and Morris WIN the 2014 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000

It's lap 159 of 161 at the 2014 Bathurst 1000. Red Bull’s Jamie Whincup has an almost three-second lead over Ford Performance's Chaz Mostert.
It's taken a massive effort from Whincup and his co-driver Paul Dumbrell to get here. After crashing out in qualifying and losing his fastest lap time, Whincup found himself buried back in 23rd position on the grid. Whincup and Dumbrell have pushed their Holden VF Commodore to the absolute limit, making up those lost positions.
The only driver to have an even bigger nightmare in qualifying was Mostert. After passing under a red flag, Mostert was excluded from qualifying, starting the race in dead last. But he and co-driver Paul Morris have shown themselves equal to Whincup and Dumbrell. As the Holden blazed through the rankings, the Ford FG Falcon was right there in pursuit.

Now, almost eight hours later, it's was a straight shootout for victory. Radio signals crackle through the febrile NSW air. It's Whincup's team, screaming at him to ease off, protect the lead. Whincup does not respond, adrenaline surging in his veins as he seeks to open up the gap.
"Jamie, I'm not joking" is the message from the team. "You're not gonna finish if you don't conserve..."
No response. The lap counter ticks up to 160. In the pits, Paul Dumbrell has his head in his hands. He can't believe what he's seeing.
The crew tries again: "You've got enough fuel for one lap... and you've got a lap and a half to do."
Finally, the word they’ve been waiting for. "Copy."
The gap is now two seconds. Whincup, suddenly aware of the gravity of the situation, just needs to hang on.
Final lap. Mostert has cut that three-second gap to 0.3 seconds. But no one has ever passed on a final lap before. Mostert is going to have to pull something seriously special out of the bag. At Skyline, he makes his move, but Whincup holds the line, shutting the door and eking out every last drop of fuel in his machine.
Coming down the treacherous Dipper, Mostert backs off, knowing a collision now means game over. But he's back on the attack at Forrest's Elbow, feinting right and left to throw the stricken Holden off the line, and then powering through into first place on the Conrod Straight.
Chaz Mostert and Paul Morris, who for nearly eight hours had not spent one second at the head of the pack, roar home to victory. Jamie Whincup, running on fumes in his spent Holden, limps through in fifth place, passed three more times in the dying seconds of the race. And Australian motorsport is treated to the most jaw-dropping spectacle in its history.
