When Lowndes And Whincup Took A Three-Peat Bathurst 2008
Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup didn't start the 2008 Bathurst 1000 from pole. They started fifth. But by lap 34, they were in front, and they stayed there for the rest of the race.

It was their third straight Bathurst win as a team, making them the first duo since Peter Brock and Larry Perkins to pull off a three-peat at Mount Panorama. The car was fast. The strategy was tight. And when the pressure came, Lowndes delivered.

Lowndes Holds Off Late Pressure

Lowndes took over for the final stint and was forced to dig deep in the closing laps. Greg Murphy, driving with Jason Richards in a Holden, pushed hard in the last 10 laps. James Courtney and David Besnard were coming fast too.

Lowndes didn't crack. He defended cleanly and kept the car in front through to lap 161, sealing the win in front of more than 53,000 people.

Whincup called it "unbelievable" in his post-race interview and gave full credit to Lowndes for the way he finished it off. "He just does it and nails it every time," Whincup told Channel Seven. "He's unbelievable."

A Place in the Record Books

With this win, Lowndes moved to fifth on the all-time Bathurst winners list. It was his fourth career win at the Mountain, including one back in 1996 with Greg Murphy and his third in a row with Whincup.

The 2008 result also pushed Whincup to the top of the Championship standings, overtaking Mark Winterbottom.
