In 1970, Oldsmobile entered the personal luxury car market with the Cutlass Supreme and the new notchback body style. It was intentionally less sporty on the surface, projecting a more formal, upscale vehicle. Although the appearance might have been more suit-and-tie, it still had the soul of a beast.

Under the hood was the massive 455 cubic-inch Rocket V8 that was borrowed from the 442. Other upgrades included the exhaust cutouts in the rear bumper, special SX badging, and optional rally suspension also borrowed from the 422.
