Legendary ATCC Winning A9X Torana Hits The Market
The legendary Holden A9X race car, one of 2 used by Bob Morris to win the 1979 Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC), has hit the market.

Offered for sale by Chris Bowden’s Ecurie Bowden, is the iconic 1979 ATCC-winning Group C GMP&A A9X Torana. This legendary vehicle boasts a rich racing heritage, having competed in the Bathurst 1000 races of 1977 and 1978. With impressive ATCC outright wins in 1978 & 1979, this Torana has secured its place in motorsport history.

Remarkably, it has had only three owners since its inception, and its authenticity is further confirmed by the original CAMS logbook.

The A9X Torana offered for sale made its debut at the 1977 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 with drivers Johnny Rutherford and Janet Guthrie behind the wheel. It continued its illustrious racing career through to 1979 until the Group C changes of 1980 rendered the A9X obsolete.

After its retirement, the car found a new home at a York-based museum where it remained perfectly preserved for over 30 years. Back in 2017, it was put up for sale through Mossgreen Auction house and acquired by the current owner.

He then commissioned a sympathetic mechanical overhaul that was entrusted to Tasmanian motorsport legend John Walker. The car made a special appearance at the 2019 Phillip Island Historic races, commemorating the 40th anniversary of its 1979 ATCC win, participating in demonstration laps only.

This A9X represents one of the greatest eras in motorsport, with Bob Morris's historic 1979 victory standing out as a monumental achievement, particularly as he triumphed over the legendary Brock and HDT at the peak of their dominance.

What sets it apart is not only its racing career, but also its remarkable journey after retiring from the track. Unlike many others, this car was carefully preserved as a museum piece, making it truly unique. Its survivor condition further adds to its allure, showcasing the remarkable care and maintenance it has received over the years.
